An asparagus crown is a dormant root system, around one year old. It's delivered bare-root and can be planted directly in the ground, where it should establish quickly with correct care. Growing asparagus from crowns rather than seeds is a shortcut to getting a flourishing plant with edible spears, saving you time and energy.
You'll find a choice of asparagus crowns for sale at Marshalls Garden, including both green and purple varieties. When selecting varieties, prioritise the quality of flavour and colour, and consider spear size and the recommended harvest time. The striking, purple Erasmus was bred specifically for the UK climate, so you can expect good yields of tight-tipped spears.
If you're unsure which variety to go for, try our Chefs' Choice Collection for exceptional flavour or our Long Season Collection to enjoy fresh-picked spears for weeks in spring.
The best time for planting asparagus crowns in the UK is early spring (March to April), when the soil has warmed up from winter but before the growing season begins. This enables the crowns to establish themselves as the weather improves. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged, or you'll risk unhealthy root development.

As well as being faster, growing asparagus from crowns rather than seeds is a more reliable method of getting a fully fledged plant. When planted correctly and given the right nourishment, the roots are highly likely to settle in successfully, and harvesting can begin in just two years. That being said, asparagus seeds remain the more cost-effective option.
Asparagus crowns can be grown in most areas of the UK, as long as you have a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. It thrives in raised beds, allotments and vegetable gardens, and is particularly well-suited to loamy or sandy soils.
Asparagus prefers slightly alkaline soil, so it's helpful to incorporate lime if your soil is too acidic. It can also tolerate some light shade, but for the best results, plant it in full sun where it will receive plenty of light to encourage healthy growth. Avoid areas where water tends to pool, as asparagus doesn't like waterlogged conditions.
Asparagus crowns perform best when planted in a sunny spot that won't be disturbed, ideally a raised bed to ensure good drainage.
As the shoots grow, gradually fill in the trench with soil until it's level with the surrounding ground. Avoid harvesting in the first two years to allow the asparagus plants to establish fully.
Asparagus crowns take two to three years to fully establish and produce a significant harvest. In the first year, the plants focus on developing strong root systems, and while some spears may appear, they should not be harvested to allow the plants to grow undisturbed. By the third year, the plants will produce a reliable crop, with harvesting typically lasting for six to eight weeks each spring.
Once established, asparagus plants can remain productive for up to two decades with proper care.
Growing asparagus from crowns is highly rewarding. Their delicious flavour is far superior when freshly harvested compared to alternatives available to buy in-store.
Asparagus is a perennial crop and will produce a reliable harvest every spring for up to 15–20 years once established, making it a long-term investment for your garden. It's also highly nutritious, rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Asparagus plants are relatively low-maintenance after the initial establishment period and thrive in vegetable gardens and allotments. Their feathery, ornamental foliage also adds visual interest, making them a versatile choice for gardeners.
